Every year, Abby’s mum has a family quiz on her birthday. It’s a long-held tradition, one that brings the whole rich and eccentric family together – and one that Abby dreads. But this year’s quiz comes with a shocking difference… as it’s about to begin, her beloved Uncle Marcus tells her that he’s dying – and someone in the family has poisoned him. Abby is the only one he can trust… You must find out who the murderer is before it is too late.
Is this game a masterpiece? No, but it is a competently produced FMV adventure. The visuals are like from a Netflix series, the audio is easily understandable, there are subtitles in different languages, there are no long loading times, and you don’t see that the game consists of 100s of video clips stitched together. Actually, it just looks/sounds like a series on TV, I had two of my family members coming in the room during my play, watching a bit and asking what series this is.
The story is a murder mystery. Your uncle got poisoned by one of six family members – and of course they had all a reason and the means to do it. So you have to collect evidence and then accuse one of them, and to be able to do so you have to play through the game multiple times (discovered evidence stays discovered, and the playthroughs are all a little bit different). You can also save your uncle if you discover what poison he got, because he is not (yet) dead when a round begins.
Improved Game Mechanics
Continuing the series of FMV games enclosed in a small space, Wales Interactive releases a new adventure, this one tells about the murder of rich Uncle Marcus. More precisely, about the already committed, but not yet committed murder of an uncle. Uncle Marcus is Schrödinger’s cat, now everything is clear. The killer is hiding in your family chat, gathered for a festive quiz, so you will have to answer not only silly questions from the family, but also try to extract the maximum amount of useful information from them to find the killer. If you have played «Five dates», for example, then you know exactly what to expect from this game. Act-by-act storytelling system, branched choices, multiple endings. Here, a detective component is added to all this, because in order to bring charges, any of the suspects needs to accumulate a certain amount of evidence.
The game deliberately behaves funny at many points, transforming into a comedic detective story. Most of the jokes are quite successful, although at some points they are quite strange. The characters are bright, especially Granny and Uncle Marcus, interacting with them is pure pleasure. It should be understood that almost the whole family here feels like spiders in a jar, the easier it is to empathize with the main character and the uncle who entrusted her with the investigation. The story itself is good, the real killer is very difficult to figure out (in many ways even on purpose, because the evidence for his accusation is perhaps the most difficult to find), the wrong endings are very original. The acting is convincing, although in some places the cheesy things is quite over the top. The result is a cheerful “whodunnit” detective, endearing with its lightness and ease. Looking forward to the next games!
