About The Game
Boat, climb, solve and explore in the beautiful ruins of a sunken world A drowned city, crumbling tips of skyscrapers stubbornly standing above the waves. Deserted villages, now inhabited by enigmatic creatures. And beneath the surging ocean waits an anguished, angry presence. Submerged: Hidden Depths is a non-combat third-person “relaxploration” adventure, set in the sunken ruins of a beautiful world. Take on the role of Miku and Taku – one cursed with a mysterious power that she wants to use for good, the other determined not to let it tear them apart. In the game, you play sister and brother trying to save a dying world, covered by a Black Plant. Ugly black tentacles coming from the sea cover most things on land. Didn’t I play something similar recently in Glow: Song of the Evertree? Anyway, that’s where the similarities between those two games already end. So what is Hidden Depth? It is an action-adventure (but many games can be called that), I would compare Hidden Depths to a Ubisoft-formula game… without the fights. So, it is like Assassin’s Creed, but with only the collectables remaining. The whole map is full of things to explore, things to find and collect, buildings to climb and puzzles to solve.
The game was made by a designer who hates violence, so there are no enemies to fight. It takes place in a large city mostly covered by the sea, so you don’t see too much of it. There are only some buildings still protruding from the water. You have a small boat and can visit these little islands to discover seeds, creatures, plants, relics, boat upgrades, landmarks, parts of the city history or some things more. Exploring the map with your boat, finding your way through little mazes of walls standing out of the water, and exploring the buildings by foot is the core game mechanic. Find places where you can enter the ruins, climb the old buildings using ladders ropes, plants or parts of the building, climb lookouts (or use the elevator for going up and down).
While you climb like Enzio (from Assassins Creed), it is far easier in this game. You cannot fall down, you don’t even have to press a button to jump. The challenge lies in not getting lost, finding collectibles everywhere, finding seeds and bringing them to a place to heal the sourroundings. You see images of dead people while doing so, not because you have a 6th sense but because the Black Plant creates them. On your boat, you can use your telescope to look around and add new locations to the (quite large) map. LOTS of things to find and explore. Above water and… below. Controller works fine. But appart from that the story is short and interesting, the visuals of the game overall are really nice, there’s some good extra exploration to do after finishing the game, the music is really really really good, and the gameplay mechanics are an improvement and expansion of the ones the first game had. In general the game feels good, solid and enjoyable. About the problems…yeah…there are a few really really short moments where the game feels strange, there are some actions that don’t have any animations.
