About The Game
Floating on a creaky wooden airship above a vast desert filled with treasures and dangers, players will journey deep into the Wild West as they survive the harsh landscape and save a young America from a monstrous threat. Your goal isn’t just survival, but victory! Can you survive long enough, can you build and craft yourself strong enough, to reach the heart of the desert, solve the mystery of the creatures’ origin and fight your way to victory? The Desert Skies Story It’s the American Wild West gone horribly wrong. It began with rumours of terrifying creatures attacking people at the far frontier. Then the first town was wiped out. Now years have passed and everyone has fled east, leaving behind a ghost land.
You were part of an expedition organised by famed scientist Nikola Tesla to investigate the creatures and their origin. A fully stocked hot air balloon kept you all safely off the desert floor, until a sandstorm destroyed most of the airship and took the rest of your team with it. I’ll start by saying that this is very, very early in the development cycle, which is bearable for someone like me, but for someone else might be a little off-putting. The features are robust, but limited. I’m hoping that the devs decide to stick to this project and really make it into something fun and interesting. At first glance, Desert Skies appears to be a raft-like game with a change of vehicle and scenery, but having played both (I returned Raft after 1 hour of play) I can say that there are fundamental differences (even in early access) which not only make it more enjoyable than Raft, but also a fair bit more streamlined. Now you’re the sole survivor, out of supplies and clinging to what’s left of your airship as it drifts down towards the sand. You’ve spotted some wagons in the desert ahead and have just enough fuel to make it there. You might find supplies, and if you can scavenge enough to get back into the air then you might be able to limp from location to location and rebuild enough to fly far west, solve the mystery and stop the monsters…
Raft requires you to scavenge while you travel from place to place, while your main enemy, the shark, attempts to destroy your raft until you build defenses, which can either be depleted or destroyed and also require constant maintenance. I think this is meant to encourage the player to continue scavenging and building, even into the late stages of the game; however, there’s almost no rest from this annoying antagonist, and in the early stages of the game, it really feels as though it’s almost pointless to build anything, as it will inevitably get destroyed. Desert Skies takes the opposite approach; You travel to a destination, land, and then scavenge around the area where you’ve landed. Your main enemy, the Seeker, will only hunt you while you’re landed, and if you’ve made too much noise while scavenging. In this game, the need to scavenge stems from the need for things like food, water, and fuel for your burner, which allows your vehicle to take flight. As a result, the game itself is a lot easier to pick up, and progressing doesn’t constantly feel like an uphill battle; there is rest between enemy encounters, and a skilled player can almost entirely avoid dealing with a Seeker if they are careful. That isn’t to say that the game is any easier; in the early game, Seekers cannot be killed or countered easily, and players are challenged with outsmarting a seeker during encounters instead of directly interacting with them.
