Call Hating is a DOS-era retro-inspired point-and-click game that answers the question “What could go wrong?” In Call Hating, you play the role of an aging, forgetful work-from-home worker who hasn’t exactly kept up with the latest technology in your home office. When your smartphone breaks and your internet connection goes down, it’s up to you to reclaim your bandwidth using obsolete and outdated tech around your house. With plot and narration inspired by classics such as The Stanley Parable and Portal, Call Hating is a work-from-home simulator wrapped in an escape room, stuffed with minigames, and baked in a 500-degree oven of dark and fourth wall-breaking humor. Explore multiple endings that hinge on the choices you make. An awesome game that can be a bit repetitive at times. The game’s puzzles are easy enough, but be prepared for a lot of trial and error. Generous check points later in the game ease the pain, and a meta progression system makes mistakes a bit easier.
Behind the premise of a game made to drive you insane, is a well-designed little gem. With carefully handcrafted pixel art, it has some decent puzzles, fun and fast-paced minigames, and some really WEIRD stuff from time to time. What stands out to me though, is the writing. The humour is top-notch. It’s clever and hilarious, the gags are timed perfectly, and the many fourth wall breaks are on point without being annoying. Some of them even made me physically burst into laughter. You. Can. Fight. Back. From a top-down 2.5D perspective. Lengthwise, the game took me over nine hours to complete and I didn’t have any major/minor bugs or crashes. Ran smoothly notwithstanding looking akin to a Playstation One game. An aesthetic remarkably familiar to our past of CRTs, floppy discs, and VCRs with unfamiliar technology. A retro-tech meets dystopian surrealism. An unforgiving world, which I became horrified to learn about and lost myself in admiring the art. A pleasant strength tied to supplementary elements the game displays to the player.
Call Hating Free Steam Pre-Installed:
The combat felt very tight, responsive and didn’t suffocate me constantly. For several moments I would have despaired, but a handy walkthrough and some tips kept my spirits up! Combat when shooting could’ve been tweaked a little to make it more accurate. Considering how the enemies’ a.i. acts and how we can’t be experts in hitting shots 100% of the time. I can forgive this slight. Healing is painless and not complicated. Intermittent yet equitable drops of supplies to recuperate, so you’re not left struggling if you carefully check your stock and surroundings The puzzles are solid. Used to great effect to tie into the lore whenever possible. Some examples are lockpicking numerical password combinations and structural obstacles that could hinder your progression.
